The film Nelkengasse is the portrait of Heinz Moldau who lived with his Jewish family in Vienna. His father ran a reputated leather goods factory in the 7th district of Vienna. In the interviews Heinz Moldau talks about his childhood and youth in Vienna, about the factory – which was aryanized; he reports how the family got threatened by the National Socialists, and how the family fled and built a new life in Great Britain. After his work life he retreated on an island north of the Scottish mainland where he lived for more than 20 years.

In Vienna 1938-1945, the buildings No 4 and 6, Nelkengasse represent a particularly tragic location in the 6th district. In these houses, many so-called Sammelwohnungen were installed – group flats where Jewish families lived following evictions from their homes. From here, 31 people were deported to concentration camps and murdered there. This film tells the story of the Moldau family and features interviews with Heinz Moldau, only 16 when he fled Vienna. By January 1, 1938, German Jews were prohibited from operating businesses and trades, and from offering goods and services. In the Autumn of 1938, only 40,000 of the formerly 100,000 Jewish businesses were still in the hands of their original owners. Aryanization was completed with the enactment of a regulation, the “Verordnung zur Ausschaltung der Juden aus dem deutschen Wirtschaftsleben” of November 12, 1938, through which the remaining businesses were transferred to non-Jewish owners and the proceeds taken by the state. Jewelry, stocks, real property and other valuables had to be sold below market value. Jewish employees were fired, and self-employed people were prohibited from working in their respective professions. (*)
