An Evening of Collective Card Playing as an Artistic Barcamp on the Social Roles of Artists Between the Poles of Cooperation and Competition
CLOUDS IN THE SHARK POOL

In small groups, participants discuss quotes from art history and art theory and try—as in a UNO game—to combine two cards to hand in to the moderator, explaining what prompted them to combine them and earning points for doing so. Once the small group has no more cards, their round is over, and they can continue discussing openly until the other groups have finished theirs. Afterwards, the points earned by each group are announced and entered into the list of rounds. This ultimately determines the final winning group.

The card game itself is structured in its evaluation categories according to the catalog of factors valid in the scientific discipline of happiness research. However, the awarding of success points according to these categories proves in practical application that this can only be done arbitrarily, i.e., from the completely individualized and thus authoritarian perspective of the moderator(s), thereby negating the meaning and possibility of practicability. Nevertheless, it is to be expected that the players will accept the assessment…

In this collective real-time production, CLOUDS IN THE SHARK POOL reflects on the role of artists and cultural creators as a medium caught between cooperation and competition—an antagonism that is one of the cornerstones of ongoing scientific debate. Where do artists stand today? In the ongoing convergence of humans and media, we can foresee a medialization of identity and thus a synchronization of individuality, raising the question of whether not only information itself is a medium, but also the artist, indeed humanity itself.

Lecture
ON THE DEVELOPMENT PHASES OF AN EXPERIMENTAL FILM ABOUT THE PLAGUE, METAPHYSICS, AND CRUELTY

[… Currently] Alexandra Reill is working on the concept for the experimental film RETREATING IN SOLITUDE […] [**]. It is a film—as Antonin Artaud says about theater—about plague, metaphysics, and cruelty. Development was halted by COVID-19.

In this lecture, she presents her content-related, dramaturgical, and formal approaches to the composition of a film, which she conceives as a narrative in the form of a soundscape; as a cinematic narration that—by combining realistic images and sounds taken from everyday life with abstract ones, by merging voice-overs and soundtracks into soundscapes, by bringing factual analysis and poetry closer together—is dedicated to the vulnerability of being human. It is always as it is …

Note on planning before C-19: The production of the film was to be submitted […] [**] in 2020, but the submission has been postponed, so no preliminary work or production of materials may be started. However, there is sufficient source and research material in the form of photos, videos, illustrations, and text that can be referred to in the lecture.
