the 3D-engine sPACE, navigable music

rotterdam / netherlands, 2006

space in time is an interactive real time video installation implemented by lab[au] on the conceptual basis created by alexandra reill. in the framework of the fixed setup of four screens in square order and looking towards each other and hosting LAb[au]'s interactive 3D-engine a freely moveable webcam is installed to give the user entering the installation the freedom to move with the camera in her/his hands. the real time capturing of moving around in space is projected onto the four screens where at the same time the projection is layered with the user's captures of moments of the past.

the space-oriented 3D engine hosted the project playing with time. 3D-worlds were conquered by fluidity and movements through time. a visual world asking the user about the relations between the past and the present lead to virtual impressions of the future.

liquid space

liquid space is a series of artistic workshops LAb[au] has initiated to design spatial audiovisuals with a specific focus on collaborative design processes.

each design cycle stands under a specific theme, theoretic approach, to frame the work on the interactive, immersive and performative qualities of digital design whereas its results lead to installations, exhibitions and performances.

for the collaborative design workshop the sPACE navigable music platform, a 3D engine developed by LAb[au], is proposed to the invited artists as starting-point for development and exchange. the engine is based on the principle of integrating different media in a structural, programmed manner ( parameter design), inside and through electronic space / navigation. In this manner the design platform propose rather space- than time-based logics of visual and sonic media, it is composing and editing inside 3d space to create visual and sonic architectures. an environment where the performer navigates his created 3D space to compose music in real time, displayed in a 360° projection space and quadra-phonic sound.

* liquid space is a term coined by: Marcos Novak; text by LAb[au]
