Thema
Armut greift um sich, Arbeitslosigkeit steigt, Rezession und Wirtschaftskrise sind keine fremden Worte mehr. Die Berichterstattung in Tageszeitungen und TV berichten täglich darüber. Dazu kombiniert sich die Angst vor dem Fremden, vor den Fremden – nicht wirklich verschieden von Argumentationslinien aus der NS-Zeit, wo allgemein verhindert werden sollte, dass „die Mongolen kommen“, in einer Zeit, aus der tausendfach Fotos vorliegen, die hungernde Menschen, angestellt in langen Reihen vor Volksküchen und einsam auf der Straße, selbst versehen mit umgehängten Schildern zeigen, die sagen: „Ich suche Arbeit“.

Ein Vergleich der Argumente im Kontext Arbeit damals unter dem NS-Regime und heute in Wien, aufgearbeitet als Sammlung von medialen Eindrücken aus Zeitungen und TV in Bild und Wort, gedruckt auf vergilbtem Kartonpapier in Postkartengröße.

Vier Wochen lang verteilten VerkäuferInnen und Geschäftsleute der beiden Strassen die Kartenobjekte an ihre KundInnen, wenn diese im Geschäft etwas erwerben und bezahlen wollten. Menschen bekamen ein Freigeschenk - kritische Stimme als goodie im kommerziellen Alltag des täglichen Gelderwerbs, des täglichen Konsums. Die Kartenobjekte boten Anlass zur eigenen Reflexion wie zur eigenen Stellungnahme im Rahmen von Diskursen, die sich anhand der Kartenobjekte zwischen den Gewerbetreibenden und den KundInnen ergaben.

Die Kartenobjekte dienen als pädagogisches Material. Durch die Analyse der Kartensujets entsteht für die jugendlichen TeilnehmerInnen Anlass zu einer unter Coaching stattfindenden Diskussion zu Antifaschismus und Antirassismus.

Das Workshop Setting kann mit der Sound Installation VERANTWORTUNG ? kombiniert werden, die den Text Der destruktive Charakter von Walter Benjamin Antworten und Textzitaten aus den Medien zu heutigem Faschismus in einem Österreich 2009 Antworten von PassantInnen im Wien auf die Frage, ob sie denken, dass man als Angehörige/r einer "mehrheitsösterreichischen" Folgegeneration der NS-Zeit Verantwortung für die unter dem NS-Regime verübten Greuel trägt, gegenüberstellt.

Konzept für eine Rauminstallation

Die Kartenobjekte bilden einen Haufen an Karten, die auf einem alten Holztisch, wie er in Bauernhöfen in Östereich in Küchen im Österreich der 30er Jahre stand. BesucherInnen der Galerie können Karten als Erinnerungszeichen mitnehmen.

Eine Wandertournee gegen Rassismus und Alltagspolemiken durch ein paar Wiener Bezirke
umgesetzt in Kooperation mit den Bezirksvorstehungen 1020, 1030, 1040, 1050, 1070, 1090, 1160 und 1170 Wien

Die Medienkünstlerin Alexandra Reill ging im Duo mit der Sozialarbeiterin Karin Gruber auf die Strasse: als soziokultureller Schwerpunkt im Juni 2009 tourte das Team durch die Bezirke Leopoldstadt, Landstraße, Margareten, Neubau, Alsergrund, Ottakring und Donaustadt und ging für jeweils einen Tag im Rahmen der soziokulturellen Intervention ECHTE GEH’N NICHT UNTER oder WÜRDEN WIR NEIN SAGEN? IV in Dialog mit AnrainerInnen im Bezirk.

Straßenfeste, Verkehrsknotenpunkte und Märkte, die gerne von den Menschen besucht werden, bildeten jenen Anknüpfungsmoment, wo Alexandra Reill und Karin Gruber [Post-]karten mit Bild- und Textzitaten aus den Medien auf der Strasse verteilten, die platte Vorurteile und populistische Argumente aufzeigen, wie sie von rassistisch agierenden Kräften immer schon verwendet wurden, und dies zum Anlass nahmen, mit Menschen in Dialog zum Thema zu treten.

Die Karten dokumentieren in historischen Text- und Bildzitaten die Situation Arbeitsloser in den 30er Jahren, NS-Propaganda zum Begriff Arbeit und die Begeisterung all zu hoher Anteile einer Wiener Bevölkerung für den „Anschluß“. Zeitgenössische Motive werden dem gegenübergestellt - heutige Polemiken rund um das Thema Arbeit und Wohlstand, Bereiche gesellschaftlichen Lebens, die heute noch und verstärkt wieder zum Anlass für Parolen genommen werden, die Menschen mit verschiedenen kulturellen Hintergründen ohne jegliche Differenzierung diffamieren und ausgrenzen, letztlich bedrohen und töten.

Im Herbst 2009 - am 10. September am Elterleinplatz in Wien Hernals - findet nochmals ein Herbstauftakt statt. Diesmal mit verstärktem, interdisziplinärem Team. Gemeinsam mit der Medienkünstlerin Alexandra Reill gehen vier Kultur- und SozialarbeiterInnen auf die Straße und bilden einen kleinen Voksauflauf.

Die Medienkünstlerin Alexandra Reill in Kooperation mit JugendarbeiterInnen bzw. LehrerInnen coacht einen Grafik- und Fotografieworkshop, in dem Jugendliche anhand der Kartenserie WÜRDEN WIR NEIN SAGEN? über historischen und heutigen Antisemitismus und, davon ausgehend, über Zusammenhänge mit heutiger "Ausländerfeindlichkeit" diskutieren.

Auf der Grundlage der erarbeiteten Gesprächsergebnisse sammeln die Jugendlichen im Internet Text- und Bildzitate aus den Medien zum Thema und entwerfen damit ihre eigenen Postkarten.

Diese ergeben im Druck eine gemeinsame Serie, die die Jugendlichen im Rahmen von öffentlichen Events auf Plakatwände, Fassaden u.ä. plakatieren und vorstellen, um auf diesem Wege selbst mit Publikum und PassantInnen in antirassistischen Diskurs zu treten.

Gemeinsam mit der Medienkünstlerin Alexandra Reill gehen vier Kultur- und SozialarbeiterInnen wieder auf die Straße und bilden einen kleinen Voksauflauf an mehreren Plätzen in Wiener "Außenbezirken" und machen im Dialog mit AnrainerInnen erneut auf aktuelle Gefahren täglichen Rassismus' und so genannter "Ausländer"feindlichkeit aufmerksam.

Die Wiederaufnahme der Wandertournee findet vom 13. bis 23. April 2010 statt.

Theme
Poverty is spreading, joblessness is rising, recession and economic crisis have become common words. Daily, one finds reports on the theme in the press and on TV. Combined with this, once can see fear of the unknown becoming stronger, fear of the unknown as such, fear of unknown persons perceived as being different - an argumentative line which is not really different from propaganda during the NS regime where one of the slogans used commonly aimed at a fight against "the mongoles coming", a time out of which thousands of photos show hungry people queueing in long rows in front of kitchens feeding the poor and lonely people with self-made cardboard signs around their neck saying "I am looking for work".

The project compares sociopolitical arguments around the theme of work used under the NS-regime and in Vienna today. It collects imagery and comments found in newspapers and on TV and prints them on post card-like objects to be taken away by installation visitors.

For four weeks, shop assistants and people serving their clients in the shops of a street spread the cards to their clients whenever they bought something in the shop and wanted to pay. They received a gift - a critical voice received as a free goodie in the daily life of commerce by people having the free choice to reflect and take it on.

The card objects are used as teaching material for workshop on intercultural learning for teens. Through studying the cards and reflecting the motifs teens can enter a coached discussion on anti-racism and anti-facism.

The pedagogic workshop concept can be extended by combining it with the sound installation RESPONSIBILITY ? contrasting Walter Benjamin's text The Desctructive Character and text citations out of the media on contemporary facism in Austria 2009 with answers given by passer-by in interviews led by Alexandra Reill asking how follow-up generations of the Austrian mainstream society of the 30ies and 40ies feel about taking on responsibility for Nazi atrocities.

The card objects form a pile placed on an old wooden farmers' table, a kitchen table. Visitors can take cards with them.

The installation can be combined with the sound installation RESPONSIBILITY ? contrasting Walter Benjamin's text The Desctructive Character and text citations out of the media on contemporary facism in Austria 2009 with answers given by passer-by in interviews led by Alexandra Reill asking how follow-up generations of the Austrian mainstream society of the 30ies and 40ies feel about taking on responsibility for Nazi atrocities.

The media artist Alexandra Reill together with the social worker Karin Gruber took to the street with their socio-cultural project REAL ONES ALWAYS SURVIVE or WOULD WE SAY NO? IV. The interdisciplinary team toured the districts Leopoldstadt, Landstraße, Margareten, Neubau, Alsergrund, Ottakring and Donaustadt – the vast majority of these districts being "working class" neighbourhoods. At street fairs, traffic junctions and in markets the team distributed to people in the street [post-] cards with images and text quotations out of the media showing the bluntness of prejudices and populist arguments used by racist forces at all times.

With their historic text and image citations, the cards document the situation of unemployed people in the 30ies, Nazi propaganda on the term work and enthusiasm of the vast majority of the Viennese population for the "Anschluß" 1938. Contemporary motifs are compared to today's polemics surrounding the issue of work and prosperity, areas of social life, still and again strongly used by racist forces defaming and segregating people with different cultural backgrounds without any differentiation, having gone so far lately that they show their preparedness to threaten and kill people.

The card objects point out how deceptive populism is and acts but how powerful it is in its influence on attitudes of people. In this context, the question of how deeply rooted fascistoid and racist attitudes are in Viennese populations, is not blocked out. Not only prompted by current incidents in Austrian society but also on a long-term basis a sustained analysis of contemporary anti-semitism and racism in everyday thinking and language is an issue.

The white cube is probably the wrong place, and maybe contemporary cultural production took to the street a long time ago. In any case, for the transdisciplinary and socio-cultural profile of this project the artistic approach of intervening in public space and directly encountering people works particularly well. As a sign of communication in public space and as a reminder sign in kitchens and living rooms, the printed [post] card itself as much as the changing of the cards from one hand to the other opens up the possibility of outreach to people, mobile discourse and open dialogue.

This time the team is composed of more than two persons. On Elterleinplatz in the “workers’” district Hernals in Vienna the media artist Alexandra Reill meets with four cultural and social workers on September 10, 2009 to discuss racism with people in the streets afresh. The socio-cultural intervention against everyday racism already took place in June 2009 as a very successful tour through a number of districts of Vienna, now the team goes back to the street as continuity seems to be needed.

With the project REAL ONES ALWAYS SURVIVE or WOULD SAY NO? IV, a fourth adaptation of the original sequence installed in shops and restaurants in Kirchengasse and Siebensterngasse in 1070 Vienna in autumn 2008, Alexandra Reill and the interdisciplinary team stand up to everyday racism and xenophobia, prejudice and populist polemic and the fear of the unknown.

The media artist Alexandra Reill together with youth workers and teachers act as a coaching team in the framework of a workshop on graphic design and photography during which the card series WOULD WE SAY NO ? is used as a starting point for discussion on options of coping with NS-past in Austria in relation to familiarities of historic and contemporary antisemitism with xenophobia.

With the background of discussion results the teens collect imagery and text citations on the theme from media platforms in the internet and with these materials design their own post cards.

As print products they form a series of cards developed by the participants of the workshop which is installed by the teens on public billboards and house facades during a series of public events where the teens present their cards to guests of the events as much as to passer-bys and on this occasion have the chance to enter antirassistic discussion themselves.
